…and Winchester said ‘ow!’ – what a night! Kicking off at 6pm the members of Capital Winchester gathered at the Bishop on the bridge for some pre-dinner drinks – not everyone could make it for the whole night but almost everyone put in an appearances.

The event was in celebration of the visitor day networking event that Capital Winchester BNI had held earlier that morning. A lot of work had gone into making it happen and it had really paid off with some very valuable business being passed between the members and visitors in attendance.

After a couple of hours drinking, courtesy of Capital Winchester BNI, it was decided that we really should head out in search of food, it didn’t take long to reach a decision to head up to Gandhi’s, one of Winchesters longest running restaurants.

The guys at Ghandis really outdid themselves in the hospitality stakes, first they found room for all of us in the restaurant (even though we’d given them no prior warning), they then spent the whole evening making sure that everyone had enough food and drink.

After a feast fit for a Maharajah, we finished up with an aperitif and left at around 12 – the owner even gave a couple of us a lift home, and to the station!

For the last month, the members of Capital Winchester BNI have have been working hard to arrange a visitor day to remember, and memorable it was! Never has networking in Winchester been so productive.

There were numerous businesses in attendance all from Winchester and surrounding areas. As well as the usual flurry of business referrals between the members, there was some good business there for the visitors with one in particular, Mint Signs, picking up no less that 4 pieces of potential business.

As if the networking wasn’t enough, we had the pleasure of a 10 minute talk from Andrew Black (our very own tax genius) who showed us how it was possible to save huge amounts of tax – we also learned that he is a closet toxophilite (apparently this is not a Greek handmaiden).

The Capital Winchester networking event on the 7th of May is looking like it’s going to be a sell out, with many local companies already committed we’re all looking forward to doing some good quality business. We have also planned a ‘knees up’ in celebration of the event later that evening!

From 6pm you will find us painting Winchester red, starting at the St James Tavern then making the most of the Winchester nightlife - a drink and maybe a bite to eat. Networking in Winchester has never been so fun!

April the 9th was visitors day, which means we had a room full of local business people who were hungry to do business.

The networking event started early with people turning up from 6.15am to make the most of the informal networking opportunity. As time progressed and new relationships developed we were ushered into the Hampshire Room for a full sit down cooked breakfast.

Each member and visitor had the opportunity to deliver a 1 minute pitch about their business, there were notable performances from Jason (Hampshire Plumbing) and Mark (MCCS Building Services). We then listened to a motivational 10 minute pitch from Roger (Action Coach) who gave us an insight into how coaching can work for every business and finished off with a very powerful refferral section where no less than 26 pieces of potential business was passed between members and visitors.

April the 9th was  a great example of how a visitors day can work to generate business. The next visitors day is on May 7th and, owing to some recent changes, is billed to be bigger, better and more profitable for all who attend.

Q: Can anyone join a chapter?

A: We only take one person per professional specialty. So if you are a residential real estate person and we already have one, we can refer you to another chapter, or allow you to open another chapter.  Of course, if you are a commercial real estate person, you could be eligible to join this chapter.

Q: How do you know new members are reputable?

A: The application asks for references and we have a membership committee that checks them. It’s word of mouth, so before they even come to a meeting they have to have spoken to someone or been invited by someone in the group. Everyone has to have a sponsor, or one is assigned to them, and they interview them.

Q: What if a member gets a referral and does poor work?

A: We have an ethics committee and it is imperative that anyone who gives a lead and finds out it was not satisfactorily handled must report that to the membership committee, who will investigate.

Q: What occupations benefit the most from networking?

A: It is not the occupation, it is the individual. The occupation can be anything. If you’re focussed and you have a dream and you’re willing to make a sacrifice, you are the person we want in the group.

Q: Are members supposed to bring visitors?

A: You’re encouraged to bring visitors for those occupations that are open, after the visitor has been prescreened, if they’re a viable candidate. It’s pretty much a closed meeting except for potential members.

Q: Do ethical rules for certain professions prohibit participation in BNI?

A: BNI understands the importance of the ethical concerns governing certain professions and acknowledges that rules can differ by location.  As such, BNI therefore requires its members to uphold the rules of its profession so as not to violate the professional’s ethical obligations.  In the event that BNI’s general rules could potentially violate a professional’s ethical code, BNI’s rules are superseded by the dictates of the professional’s ethics’ code.  Significantly, a primary objective of BNI is to educate its membership in ways to market and grow business.   It is BNI’s intent to ensure that this is permitted.

Q: If I specialize in a field within my profession, am I expected to be an expert in all aspects of my profession?

A: BNI understands that many professions are broad and that people often specialize within their profession.  BNI does not expect, nor does it encourage, any professional to participate in an area in which the professional does not have expertise.  On the contrary, BNI prohibits professionals from acting outside of the scope of their abilities.

Q: My profession does not let me directly solicit business.  Is BNI still right for me?

A: BNI’s primary objective is to assist its members in ways to improve their business and to educate them concerning how they can effectively network.  Business people get business when their expertise is known and others reach a comfort level with them.  BNI provides a forum that allows members to meet other business peers who need to know effective and efficient business people.

The main purpose of the Capital Winchester BNI is to generate new business for it’s members. Each week members go about their daily business with the other members in mind. Once you are established, trusted and your business understood members will begin to open up their networks to you and begin actively uncovering business opportunities.
